Ashoka is leading a profound transformation in society. In the past three decades, the global citizen sector, led by social entrepreneurs, has grown exponentially. Just as the business sector experienced a tremendous spurt in productivity over the last century, the citizen sector is experiencing a similar revolution, with the number and sophistication of citizen organizations increasing dramatically.
Rather than leaving societal needs for the government or business sectors to address, social entrepreneurs are creating innovative solutions, delivering extraordinary results, and improving the lives of millions of people.

Are smart people miserable? - McLeod: Ignorance isn’t the only path to bliss
By Lisa Earle McLeod - Updated: 09/22/07 9:28 AM
There’s a long-held theory that average folks are happier than the brainiacs with high IQ’s. The premise — probably concocted by a bunch of geniuses — is that if you’re super smart, you’re more likely to be tormented by things like global warming, the meaning of life and your dysfunctional in-laws than the average Joe or Jane.
The masses in the middle of the bell curve are thrilled just to have a roof over their head and a martini every Friday night, but the Mensa members are wracked with despair because they alone understand life’s complexities.
I’ve always kinda liked this theory, secretly relishing in the thought, or hope, that I’m one of the smart ones and thereby excused from being chipper.
I first heard the smart equals miserable idea from a shrink. Read on ...

Human mind - Many factors impact intelligence.
By DR MILTON LUM (Source: The Star Online)
WHAT is intelligence? Various definitions are propounded by different organisations. Although the brain is less than 2.5% of our body weight, it accounts for about 20% of the body’s energy when at rest. Its usage of oxygen and glucose is about 10 times that of other organs.
General intelligence
The most influential approach in understanding intelligence is based on psychometric testing. All forms of IQ tests correlate with each other.
In the early 20th century, English psychologist Charles Edward Spearman devised a statistical measurement of performance across a variety of tests. He found that the same people who did well in various mental tests tended to use a part of their brain, which he called “G” or general intelligence. This gave rise to the concept of a single intelligence, which enables humans to deal with various mental tasks.
Multiple intelligences
American psychologist Howard Gardner carried out studies on children and adults, the gifted, the brain-damaged and individuals from diverse cultures. This led him to formulate the view that there are at least eight different types of intelligence, i.e. logical, linguistic, spatial, musical, kinesthetic, naturalist, intra-personal and inter-personal.
He argues that IQ tests measure only logical and linguistic intelligence and some aspect of spatial intelligence, while ignoring other types of intelligence.

Research Links Stress and Emotional Intelligence to Catastrophic Leadership Failure
Watkinsville, GA – August 24, 2007 – Why do good leaders with proven track records sometimes suddenly begin making really bad decisions—or no decisions? New research from Henry L. Thompson, Ph.D., President and CEO of High Performing Systems, Inc., shows that stress and its impact on cognitive and emotional abilities may provide at least a partial explanation.
