| | | Exam success linked with mental toughness - Feb 13 2008 Abbie Wightwick, Western Mail “MENTAL toughness” is as crucial as intelligence for passing exams, according to a new academic study pioneered in Wales. Teenagers preparing for GCSEs were asked to complete a personality quiz developed by Welsh company AQR along with Dr Peter Clough, head of psychology at Hull University. Results showed those scoring highly on the mental toughness measure did better in cognitive ability tests (CATs), leading to calls for schools to give lessons in the subject. The report concluded, “It is thought the more mentally tough a person is, the more likely they are to do well in a test (because they are more confident) and feel the more likely they are to absorb learning because they are more confident and feel more in control.” | S-O enrichment coordinator defines gifted students A part of my role as Enrichment Coordinator for the Sibley-Ocheyedan School District is to inform educators, parents and community members on the needs of advanced or gifted students. This first article will focus on a little background information on the gifted and a few definitions. High IQ is usually one of the first traits that the general public associates with gifted students. So, let's begin with the role of intelligence in identifying students with high ability. If an IQ test were administered to a very large sample of the population, around 68% of them would have an IQ score of between 85 and 110, another 13% would score between 70-85 and 13% would score in the range of 110-130. Around 3% would score above 150. Plotting the scores on a graph would result in a bell shaped curve, with the majority of people scoring in the middle of the curve. It is important to remember that this bell curve applies to a very large sample of people. It is also important to remember that most of us are going to be within the "average" range of intelligence. Average does NOT mean mediocre, it does not mean that an average student has no gifts or talents and it does not mean that a person with an average or below average IQ cannot be highly successful in life. Conversely, an extremely high IQ does not guarantee high achievement. | Global Consortium to Construct New Cable System Linking US and Japan to Meet Increasing Bandwidth Demands Construction Underway to Build 10,000 km Linear Cable System with a Capacity of up to 7.68 Tbps to Enhance Trans-Pacific Connectivity - Last update: 6:30 p.m. EST Feb. 25, 2008 TOKYO, Feb 25, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- A consortium of six international companies announced they have executed agreements to build a high-bandwidth subsea fiber optic cable linking the United States and Japan. The construction of the new Trans-Pacific infrastructure will cost an estimated US$300 million. The new cable system -- named Unity -- will address broadband demand by providing much needed capacity to sustain the unprecedented growth in data and Internet traffic between Asia and the United States. Unity is expected to initially increase Trans-Pacific lit cable capacity by about 20 percent, with the potential to add up to 7.68 Terabits per second (Tbps) of bandwidth across the Pacific. According to the TeleGeography Global Bandwidth Report, 2007, Trans-Pacific bandwidth demand has grown at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 63.7 percent between 2002 and 2007. It is expected to continue to grow strongly from 2008 to 2013, with total demand for capacity doubling roughly every two years. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
